American Beauty Garden Center
The Story of Our Store
Our owners, Pete Freedman and Alan Corder, shared a vision to start a business that would not just be about work, but would also let them to be a part of something important. They wanted to appeal to people with different needs and budgets but who all share their own desire to improve their lives with plants. This business would allow them to have an emotional connection with their work and give customers a pleasant buying experience. Another important aspect to this new business would be to give residents in our area access to organic nutrients and pesticides, hydroponic equipment, and other niche products difficult to find here.
American Beauty Garden Center was born in 2007 after a year of planning. The first location was in Plaza-Midwood in the heart of Charlotte. We had our soft opening in June of 2007 and our grand opening in September of 2007, which featured live bands, food and fire dancing. The retail space was so empty that the Charlotte Roller Girls asked if they could practice there! Slowly but surely we were able to build up our inventory. Over the years we participated in many community events, including the Plaza-Midwood Art Crawls, Midwood Mania, and the 2013 Chantilly Chili Cook-Off which we entered as the “Captains of Capsaicin” in homage to our super hot chili loving crew. Over time we outgrew our initial location and began searching for a new space to transplant into.
We moved into our current location in Lanier Plaza at 4400 E. Independence Blvd. in June of 2015 and are thrilled to be here. We miss our old space and the businesses and neighbors we had in Plaza-Midwood, but our new space is bigger, easier to access and has plenty of parking. It is easy to get to our new location via Lanier Street from Monroe Road. We are very fortunate that many of our customers have followed us to our new location and we love seeing them. The Amity neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods have been very welcoming to us and we are so pleased to have gained new customers since our move. We are so proud to say that we have helped several Charlotte Mecklenburg schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Department with many projects, and have donated seeds and supplies to various charter schools and community gardens.
Our guiding principle is that a happy customer is the best advertisement, so customer service is an integral part of our identity. Taking care of our customers is truly a mission we take very seriously. It is our goal to match a customer with a product or method that will most efficiently be what they need. We are active with social media so as to give our customers a platform to discuss and address their needs, and customers can also email us with questions. Even though we are a small locally-owned business, we are open from 10am-8pm Monday through Saturday and 12pm-6pm on Sunday in order to be available as much as possible.
